Data Sources & Methodology
Transparency documentation for researchers, journalists, and users.
1. Primary Data Sources
We aggregate data from several official and open-source providers to generate real-time dashes. Below is the registry of our primary inputs:
| Data Point | Source | Update Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Ferry Schedules | BC Ferries (Public Schedule) | Static (Updated manually on schedule change) |
| Live Webcams | BC Ferries & QIHA | Real-time stream |
| Weather | Open-Meteo API | Hourly |
| Tides | Fisheries and Oceans Canada (IWLS) | Daily predictions |
2. Methodology
Schedule Calculation
The "Next Sailings" logic uses client-side JavaScript to compare the user's local device time against
the static schedule array. It filters for sailings where departureTime > currentTime.
Capacity Estimates
We do not currently display live deck capacity percentages, as BC Ferries does not provide a public API for this route's real-time deck space. Any capacity indicators would be estimates based on historical trends, but we have chosen to exclude them to maintain strict accuracy.
3. Citation Policy
We encourage the use of our data for research, news, and community planning. We request attribution under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license.
